ArchivedWhy do you oppose gay marriage?I think I begin to see what you're getting at. We generally have to figure out causality from correlations of various kinds, yes. But you can't equate the two. An example I heard recently... ice cream sales have a high correlation with drowning deaths. Of course, if you think about it, it's obvious that the one doesn't cause the other, and easy to backtrack to the shared cause -- summer. The history of human culture is a bit more complex... although I still think it's obvious that tolerance of homosexuality will not lead to the downfall of a society. There just isn't any path from A to B. At most, there could be a shared cause. And I haven't once asked you to change your personal morality or your faith... only to refrain from trying to impose it on me. Thank you for hearing my argument, at least. Now, as for the teen suicide statistics... Exactly how does one determine that a dead teenager was not homosexual? The studies I've seen are all on suicidal thoughts and/or failed attempts, self-reported by teenagers who can also provide information on their orientation. That said, I've never seen a study that indicated that 33% of teen suicides -- or suicidal teens -- are homosexual. I would assume the brochure was either a mistake, or based on a particular study that found an unusually high number, presumably through some methodological fault. If the writers of the brochure deliberately lied to or mislead their readers, then I do not condone it. But that they exaggerated the problem, doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist. And if you want misleading statistics from your side of this "battle" -- from studies with methodology so bad I cannot help but think it was deliberate -- then I can dredge some up for you. |
