ArchivedWhy do you oppose gay marriage?I am well aware of what you can and cannot do in Texas as I lived in Houston from 1977 to 2001 before I returned to my birthplace in Colorado. I watched the coverage of the Supreme Court and their decision on the Texas sodomy laws with interest due mainly to the political religious rights concentration on the homosexual aspect of those laws. One of the reasons the Court ruled those laws unconstitutional was Texas did not enforce them equitable; prosecutors used a double standard and unlike most Christian's I agree with the Court's decision although I believe their written decision shows the arrogance of the Court and Congress' need to excercise their Constitutional control over the Court. My responsibility is to live under the authority of God, not man. Before any person can look at viable options for living their lives they must first accept themselves for who they are or as Jesus said "love your neighbor as yourself. Self-love must come before any real personal growth can be achieved. Self-love is not narcissism, which is self-absorption. In my personal dealings with the gay community their orientation is not my first concern; my first concern is who they are as an individual. You’re looking for cause and effect not correlation? Can you explain, “for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction” in terms of cause and effect not correlation? Yes, I know this is a law of physics but it was derived by the use of the scientific method. If you want an explanation of cause and effect for the correlation of a decline and fall of a civilization and sexual morality anthropologists and psychologists will have to do the research. You are an educated person so I am sure you know something about the scientific method, but for those who don’t: The first step is observation or for the sake of this discussion history. Since this forum deals with homosexuality that is my focus, I can make a good case in the heterosexual forum that the major cause of the decline in any culture and society is the legalization of divorce, abortion, and the decline of straight morality, which always precedes an increase in homosexuality. We live in a heterocentric world where the majority will focus their disdain on the acts of the minority since looking in the mirror is uncomfortable. I find it difficult to take the political religious right seriously since they harp on homosexuality while ignoring heterosexual sins. Jerry Falwell is a Southern Baptist, which has the highest rate of divorce and remarriage of any Christian denomination, but I don’t hear him harping on a return to Biblical morality for ever-straights or pushing to ban or repeal no fault divorce laws. You state quite accurately that to legislate Lev 18:22 would run into the First Amendment, however if the end result of the proposed Hate Crime Law is to abridged my right to state homosexuality is a sin so will you. You also quite accurately state you have the “right” to work for the legalization of civil unions for the gay community but on the other hand I have the “right” to work against the legalization of such unions based on the correlation of the fall of a culture and the decline in sexual morality. You asked for a non-religious reason for my stance and I have given you a valid reason; a reason shared by some gay activists, which you refuse to accept. As to the 300,000 I am addressing their spiritual needs and I feel the need to get the truth out for those who live a lifestyle they could walk away from if they had the truth of the possibility of doing so. You mention suicides; how many gay suicides are the result of man and women who want to change for personal reasons but lack the support, knowledge, and access to information that could save their lives? You cannot answer that question and neither can I; but I do know that some gay men would seek transformation of their sexual orientation is they had access to valid and accurate information on the causes of the condition. Heterosexual’s suicide over failed relationships but you don’t see them blaming Christians for making their lives miserable. Gay activists concentrate on the suicide rate among gay teens while ignoring the suicide rate among straight teens. This is a political use of a tragedy that needs to be addressed on an individual basis without pointing fingers. |
