ArchivedWhy do you oppose gay marriage?Aineo, First, I already have the right to "do what I want." Even in Texas. I can have promiscuous homosexual sex and nobody will bat an eye. The one thing I can't do is formalize my intentions of a long-term monogamous relationship... rather ironic, I think. Second, I truly do not see how the second possibility will lead to the downfall of society. I'm looking for cause-and-effect, here, not correlation. Don't just tell me it's happened before, tell me why it happened and why it's going to happen again. As to your earlier question: That's not just an argument against the legalization of marriage, that's an argument against... everything. Because the problem isn't marriage per se, the problem is that the more homosexuality is accepted, the more likely that young people "dealing with issues" will accept it within themselves, and not turn to your "other options." Therefore, anything that leads to the increased acceptance of homosexuality must be weighed against your theoretical 300,000 lives. A genuinely slippery slope, I'd say... where do you draw the line? What is worth 300,000 lives? But setting that aside: I don't agree with the premise that all self-accepting homosexuals are "lost," and that those who choose to try to change their orientation, or remain celibate when they cannot, are "saved" from their fate. So to the extent that the legalization of gay marriage will also lead to increasing cultural acceptance of homosexuality, I consider it a fringe benefit, not a detriment. If anything, it may save some lives. I cannot imagine that the next generation of gay kids will be more depressed and more suicidal because they grew up in a culture where homosexuality is legally and socially equivalent to heterosexuality. Of course, if it's their souls you're concerned about, that's another matter. But I don't think you can really make a case for restricting their rights to (potentially) save their souls... even if I do understand why you'd try to. That's another slippery slope, and anyone who takes it will crash right into the First Amendment. |
