gods in the strongs concordance:430 'elohiym el-o-heem' plural of 433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:--angels, X exceeding, God (gods)(-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty.
It is written:Exodus 20:3 - Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
And it is written that there are false gods: 2 Chronicles 15:3 - Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law. And the true God
Jeremiah 10:10 - But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
1 Thessalonians 1:9 - For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.
1 John 5:20 - And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
“The first thing a man should do in order to serve God is to know who the God is and what He is.” This is the principle that I was holding with, since the time that I felt the love to serve God. This is because, I can’t served God if I do not know who he is, and I can’t do the things which would glorify Him if I do not know what He is.
And since I do believed that the words of God are written on the Holy Bible, therefore, on the Bible should I search the truth regarding the true God.
And as I do the search, I tried first to look for the Christ’s words regarding the true God, and this is what I have found:
<<John 17:1>> “Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,’” (New King James Version).
From this verse, I noticed that Christ was praying to His Father. And on the verse 3 this is what Christ had said with regards to His Father:
<<John 17:3>> “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (ibid.)
From His words, I learned that it is the Father who is to be known as the only true God.
And since, Christ did mentioned the word “they” on the verse 3, and this word refers to the people who should know that the Father is the only true God, I asked the Bible who this people Christ had referred to with that word. And this is what the Bible has revealed to me:
<<John 17:6>> “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.” (ibid.)
Now it is clear to me that those people who were given by God to Christ out of the world are those who knew, who the true God is, because to them Christ had manifested it. Then, I tried to find out who they are, who only knew the truth regarding the true God?
<<I Corinthians 8:6>> “yet for us there is only one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.” (ibid.)
The man spoke these words was the Apostle Paul. According to Him, yet for us there is only one God, the Father. Therefore, only to the Apostle Paul and the people he was talking with, the truth regarding the True God was manifested to and they were the only people who knew that the Father is the only true God.
Not all people have this knowledge, just as what Apostle Paul had said in verse 7:
<<I Corinthians 8:7>> “However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.” (ibid.)
But when I read the verse 5, I noticed that the Apostle mentioned gods. The verse goes:
<<1 Corinthians 8:5>> “For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords),” (ibid.)
Yes, there were called gods. But by considering Christ words as he said that ‘the true God is only one,’ thus I got the conclusion that these so-called gods are not the true Gods because there is only one true God, He is the Father, and it is also being clarified by the Apostle Paul that there is no other God but one:
<<1 Corinthians 8:4>> “therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one.” (ibid.)
Talking about the so-called gods, it is true that there were many. For example:
1. The carved images in likeness of anything were called gods (Exodus 20:4,3; Isaiah 44:9-10).
2. The devil who claimed to be the owner of this world (John 4:8-9) (just claiming, because the owner of all things is the True God) as a ruler of this world (John 12:31) is also called god of this edge or god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4).
3. Those whom the words of God came were called gods (John 10:34-35).
But no one or nothing among those gods like the Lord, according to the writer of the book of Psalms:
<<Psalms 86:8>> “Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord; Nor are there any works like Your works.” (ibid.)
The Lord referred to here is the Lord and God of the Israel, according to the book of Isaiah:
<<Isaiah 63:16>> “Doubtless You are our Father, Though Abraham was ignorant of us, And Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O Lord, are our Father; Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.” (ibid.)
And the said Father is the one who created all things, according to the book of Malachi:
<<Malachi 2:10>> “Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously with one another By profaning the covenant of the fathers?” (ibid.)
And He is the only one God according to Apostle Paul:
<<1 Corinthians 8:6>> yet for us there is only one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him: and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.” (ibid.)
There is none like the Father, because only the Father is the true God (John 17:3,1). He alone is God, according to the writer of the book of Psalms:
<<Psalms 86:10>> “For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God.” (ibid.)
Also according to the book of Isaiah, He alone is God:
<<Isaiah 37:16>> “‘O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.’” (Ibid.)
Sometimes I was asking to myself, what does the Bible meant when it say that there is only God? Is there other true God exists besides the only true God?
The True God has answered this question of mine. He said:
<<Isaiah 45:21>> “Tell and bring forth your case; Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has declared this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the Lord? And there is no other God besides Me, A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me.” (ibid.)
According to God, besides Him there is none. But is there someone or something like Him and make equal to Him or can be compared to Him?
He answered me again, there is none like Him, and make equal to Him nor there will be compared to Him:
<<Isaiah 46:5>> “‘To whom will you liken Me, and make Me equal. And compare Me, that we should be alike?’” (ibid.)
If there is only one true God exists and there is none can be compared to Him, then is there any God formed before Him or is there any who shall come after Him? He answered, there is no God formed before Him nor there shall be after Him:
<<Isaiah 43:10>> “‘You are My witnesses,’ says the Lord, ‘And My servant whom I have chosen, That you may know and believe Me, And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me.’” (ibid.)
So, it is already clear that when the Bible say that There is only one God, this means that He is the only God exists; There is no other God besides Him; No one and nothing can be compared to Him and made equal to Him; And, there was no God before Him nor there shall be after Him.
But how about if God made another God, can this be possible?
According to God Himself, He is almighty God:
<<Genesis 17:1>> “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to
Abram and said to Him, ‘I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.’”(ibid.)
Thus, for Him all things are possible. So if He wants to make another God, then He can do that. But the question is, will He make another God?
I tried to search the answer of the Bible on my question. And this is what I have found in the book of Malachi:
<<Malachi 3:6>> “’For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.’” (ibid.)
According to the Bible, God do not change. So, if he said that there will be no God after him, then this truth shall not change, and there should have no another God after Him, which clearly means that He will never make another God, because if He will, then it will be a contradiction to His proclamation that there shall no other God after Him, and is a sign that He already has changed.
But, someone said to me that Moses was made God by God. Is this true? So I tried to search the Bible about this question, and this is what I have found:
<<Exodus 7:1>> “So the Lord said to Moses: ‘See, I have made you as god to Pharaoh and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.’” (ibid.)
From this verse alone, it is clear that Moses was not made true God. Instead, God made him as god to Pharaoh. When it say “as god” is already understood that Moses was made as if he was god to Pharaoh. Therefore, he is not true God.
How about Christ? In the book of Hebrew Christ was called God by God. Thus, is it clear that there is another God existed besides the Father, isn’t it?
In my Bible, the New King James Version this is what we could find in the book of Hebrews:
<<Hebrews 1:8>> “But to the Son He says: ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom.’” (ibid.)
On this verse I can say that the word God is referred to the Son who is Jesus Christ. So, there is already a contradiction from the study I made earlier.
Since I believed that the word of God is truth, as what Christ had said:
<<John 17:17>> “ ‘Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (ibid)
Then there should have no contradiction. So, in order to verify this verse, I examined different translation on this verse, particularly the phrase: “But to the Son He says: ‘Your throne, O God,” (NKJV) and this is the result:
1. The Emphatic Diaglott, Interlineary Word for Word Translation:
<<Hebrews 1:8>> “. . .concerning but the Son: The throne of thee the God . . .”
2. James Moffat Translation:
<<Hebrews 1:8>> “. . .He says of the Son, ‘God is thy throne, . . .”
3. New World Translation
<<Hebrews 1:8>> “But with reference to the Son: ‘God is your throne . . .”
4. The Interlinear Greek-English New Testament:
<<Hebrews 1:8>> “. . .but with regards to the Son: The throne of the – God (is) . . .”
Now, it is already clear to me that the correct translation of the said verse doesn’t say that Christ is God, but the throne of Christ is God.
In order to prove that this translation is correct, I asked the Bible: “Is it true that the throne of Christ is God?”
This is what the Bible say in the book of Colossians:
<<Colossians 3:1>> “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.”
According to the Bible, Christ is sitting at the right hand of God. Hence, it is true that Christ’s throne is God.
