ArchivedWhy do you oppose gay marriage?I can empathize with your depression at realizing your sexuality was not the "norm" since I went through the identical process; only I did it in 1959. I did not turn to drugs, alcohol, cutting, or any other self-punishment. I accepted myself for who I was and lived my life in peace with my sexuality. I knew my lifestyle was not acceptable to society in general but who cares? I didn't! I got my degree, worked as a civilian for the Air Force during Viet Nam, worked for a fortune 500 company and NEVER hid my sexuality. On the other hand I did not make an issue of it either. Every employer I had from the U.S. Government forward either suspected or knew I was gay and as long as I did my job they could have cared less. My gay brother was outed while in the Navy; was court-martialed, which resulted in his retention at a top-secret facility in Hawaii. He left the service with a general discharge with all benefits. The only gays who are discriminated against in most of American society are those who make such an issue of it they force or invite discrimination. Although I live in America I answer to a higher authority - God. I will obey the laws of this land but I will not disavow or violate my faith for any reason including accepting gay marriages. Go to the heterosexuality forum and start a thread on divorce and see what evangelical Christians feel about the liberalization of divorce laws. Morality cannot be legislated, but that does not mean I have to accept, promote, or compromise my beliefs for a minority. Homosexuality is not a civil rights issue; it is a morality issue. |
