"Love your neighbor as yourself" is a direct quotation from Lev 19:18 for those who don't know this, and is second in importance to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind."
Love your neighbor as yourself is just that; love your neighbor as you love yourself. A better way to understand this is "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". If you want respect, give respect is another way to put it.
I think I know where you are coming from and I wish someone had loved me enough 40 years ago to show me the path to the freedom I have now. So to answer your question if I love my neighbor I will not sit idly by and watch him self-destruct. I will share what information I have available to help him make an educated decision and if he rejects that information I will continue to love and respect him as a fellow human being. Love your neighbor does not mean “accept” his behavior.
