Science, Creation & EvolutionSome Christians believe the earth is 6,000 rears old...Dating with C14 can only be used for things not older then several thousand years, that is correct. This depends on the uhm "half value time"? That is probably not the correct term but I can explain a bit about dating things with C14. C14 is an isotope of the element C (Carbon). A certain percentage of all C atoms on earth is of the isotope C14. This C14 isotope is a radioactive one witch means that they are disappearing at a certain rate. This rate is descibed as the half value time, the time it takes for half of all C14 isotopes to disappear. Lots of things have C atoms in it, trees till example. Living things such as a tree create C14 at the same rate it disappears. As soon as you kill the tree, it stops producing C14, so all the C14 present at the moment you kill the tree will slowly start to disappear. When an archeologist finds a piece of paper made of tree he can calculate the age of it with help of C14 by measuring how much C14 is left. Since C14 has a relatively short half value time, there won't be any of it left if the paper is older then several thousand years. Therefore C14 can't be used to date things older than that. But fortunately for us, there are other radioactive isotopes with much longer half value times, and with help of those scientist have calculated that the earth is several billion years old, I don't remember how many, 3 or 4 billion years or something like that. |
