Abortion Memorial ServiceUnborn babies feel pain!Firstly, if you're going to use the term anti-lifer, then I am going to use the term bible thumper. Lets both agree not to call each other names. I could easily say that humans play jenga, and therefore fetus's play jenga. That is a huge leap in logic.
I suppose there is the issue of when all the circuitry for pain is developed in a fetus
One cannot feel pain without a significantly developed central nervous system and a conscious thought process. An unborn child lacks both of these until the third trimester, which is where this point is even remotely arguable. If you want to define ethics by life and death, thats fine. Personally, i don't agree, but thats an entirely different discussion. Back to abortion. Well, it probably isn't killing which you have an issue with, you probably eat, don't you? Even the more conservative of vegans kills basic plantlife in order to survive. So, more accurately, its killing a human being which is wrong. Thats a pretty decent standard. Now, lets define a human being. If the tiny zygote that is the result of a fertilized egg is considered human, than all I ask is how this creature is more human than my left arm. Nobody argues that the willing removal of an arm is perfectly acceptable. The most common argument i have seen against this point is that a zygote comes from an egg and sperm, and is therefore a seperate human being. I am going to continue the metaphor and say that my arm is also the result of an egg and sperm. The next counter-point is that an arm cannot grow into a human. Well, if preventing a life is wrong, then abstinence should be grounds for capital punishment. The last point usually brought up is that a human life has not been started with abstinence. Of course, this argument relies on the original argument that zygotes are humans, and therefore creates a circular argument, which is a blatant logical fallacy. |
