It's not science I lose faith in, it's people! It's not the data, it's the interpretations that get pretty messed up.
But yes, incorrect material gets cited reasonably (or unreasonably) often. I can't give you the sources right now, but something that sticks in my mind was a 'founding' culture of cancer cells which somehow made their way into experiments and studies which had thought to exclude them entirely. I don't know if anyone was at fault here and I am not trying to blame anyone, but the problem was that the results of the studies and expereiments threw everything off entirely for years where cancer study was concerned. As I recall, the original founding culture came from one woman and that type of cell, or the cells from that culture, carried her name. Someone else here may know what I am talking about.
Now this was not, to the best of my knowledge, an intentional wrong. But the fact is the studies using these wrong cells were cited everywhere cancer papers were written.
In this case, the self-correction did come and I am very grateful for that. But when an unintentional problem gets cites innumerable times, what about an intentional and crafty deceit? They crop up more often than we would like, and a number may remain undiscovered for years or even forever.
The root of the problem? Sin is in the heart of man. The desire to achieve one's personal goals regardless of the consequences to others. This is the problem which science cannot fix. Only Christ can fix that one.
So it is imperative that we look at science publications and news with at least a hesitant eye and not pure gullibility.
In addition, my own opinion is that when the Bible has something to say about a certain subject, that would be my guide as to where to find the truth about it. I absolutely trust God's Word -- I don't always trust myself, but I always trust HIM!
