As to gay unions, the US of A is a democracy governed by laws passed by elected representatives. The courts responsibility is to enforce those laws and deal with legislated inequities under existing law. Although we have 3 branches of government the ultimate power is in the hands of the Congress, not the President or the Supreme Court. The Congress has the power to over ride a Presidential veto, impeach the President, vice President and any civil officers of the goverment, which includes Federal judges and has the Constitutional authority to limit the power of the Supreme Court. Therefore the only way gay unions can be legalized in the U.S. is on a state-by-state decision since the Federal Government does not issue marriage licenses. |
