ArchivedProposed TruceExtremist actions begets extremist re-action and so-on. I blame part of the problem on the Media and their drive for ratings. Example: Gay Pride events. The media immediately runs to the most outlandish people who participate rather than focusing on the majority (like myself) who's behavior is just to celebrate the strides gay people have made in everyday clothing acting in a completely approriate manner in public. But no, they have to find the most exaggerated float in a gay pride parade the one where people are wearing virtually nothing and demonstrating simulated sexual acts. What affect does the aforementioned have? Such pictures are beamed into people's television sets and depict a completely false picture of what gay life is like. I disagree with your second part. The Founding Fathers wisely put 3 branches of government into our republic. These 3 branches each put a series of checks and balances into our particular form of democracy. If the legislative branch became to powerful the judical branch had the power to make changes. If the executive branch became to powerful the legislative branch had the power to effect change...and so on. Therefore, the court system is doing exactly what it was designed to do. In my opinion the Legislative branch has over extended its authority regarding this matter. They are now trying to legislate morality into our democracy which was prohibited in our consitution. Another example relevant to the discussion. In the 1980's the war on drugs was in full swing. States went out of control in setting absurd lengthy mandatory sentencing laws for minor drug posession offences. Our prisons became full of prisoners who had just a few ounces of marijuna and who had been sentenced to years in prison for such. Further, states adopted 3 strikes laws whereby someone who committed any felony for the 3rd time were being given life sentances. People were going to jail for life for nothing more than shop lifting an item of greater value than $250 for life. It became outrageous. The legislative branch of many states were out of control. Farily and justily the courts stepped in and invalidated many of those mandatory sentencing laws as well as 3 strike laws. Thus, current debate on marriage and the fact that the legislative branch wants to get into the business of law making related to morality has EVERY place to get into this national debate and reign in the legislators in Washington and in States. |
