Christian/Muslim ThreadsThe moon reflecting the sun light in the KoranI thought I should post this issue and reply to Musti on another thread. Kai replies: To many Muslims this is a miraculous scientific prediction, the typical words: 'How could Muhammad or any human individual have predicted such facts 1400 years ago'. However, simply and basically, this Muslim assertion is not as amazing and miraculous as often portrayed, at least when we consider science which predates Muhammad. The whole idea of the moon reflecting a borrowed light was already predicted 2400 years before Muhammad. Anaxagoras (4-5 Century BC) was one who indicated the ancient scientific debate that the moon shines by reflected light. At this point of history the major theory still envisaged the reflected light to originate from universal central fire which both the earth, moon and sun were orbiting around. Later (in 310-230 BC) Aristarchus of Samos was probably the first (the ancient Hindus may have predated Aristarchus on this matter) who predicted that the earth with the other planets orbited the sun, and that the earth rotates on its axis once in twenty-four hours (Russel, History of Western Philosophy, p.222-223). Later in scientific history, beyond 100 BC, the ancient Roman scientist Lucretius in his famous writing: ‘The Nature of the Universe’, reflects on the same scientific issue. He reveals that the scientific debate on the light-reflection of the moon has reached high already a century before Jesus was ever born. He obviously understands that the sun releases enormous light and energy; as he wonders: (p.189), earlier he states: however, at this point of the scientific era the issue has reach predictable accuracy; Lucretius writes: Considering the fact that this scientific discovery was written 600-700 years before the era of Islam, it debunks the idea that the Koran has predicted a modern discovery. . It is obvious that due to lack of proper tools, certain details in ancient science are obscure. However, it is a matter of fact that a range of propositions were correct and correspond exactly with modern scientific discoveries. Ancient science reveals that the science which predates Muhammad predicts the solar system (usually orbiting with seven planets or earths), the spherical earth, the Big Bang, the expansion of the universe, the building of the atoms, DNA, the laws of thermodynamics, embryology, the science of the clouds and thunder, water science and the water cycle, etc…thus none of the scientific facts of the Koran can be credited as miracles; from the few surviving writings we possess from ancient libraries we can confirm that they all predate Islam with centuries. Be blessed everyone Kai [/quote] |
