Well's points are systematically debunked here: http://www.ncseweb.org/icons/
You preach to us about 'misinforming' students by presenting theories as facts, Tuppence. Let's not forget that religion is doing the same thing, but worse: The notion of teaching 'creationism' along with/instead of evolution is FAR worse even! Evolution makes predictions about want to come and EXPLAINS things. Creationism simply declares: "God did it. End of discussion. And if you don't believe me, look at this passage in the bible."
I read a very amusing article about teachers that tried to put together a syllabus to teach 'creationism.' They never managed to make it because they couldn't find any useful data... When I find the link, I'll post it for others to read.
The point is that creationists 'KNOW' the answers because they are in the bible, and they interpret only the information that fits in with their model. You do the same thing you have just accused evolutionists of doing.
Evolutionists look at the fossil record to conclude that reptiles were on Earth long before birds. Creationists 'know for certain' that birds were here before reptiles, because the bible tells them god created them before the reptiles. The first is a fact (carbon-dating, the position of the fossils in the layers of earth), the other one is a statement, based on a book that thinks rabits chew chud and bats are a type of bird.
Do you see the problem I have with creationism, Tuppence?
Here is a quote about HOW ridiculous creationism is. I actually wonder why I even bother to discuss it....
American Atheists.com wrote: Given the scientific "revelations" found in the Bible, ICR [Institute for Creation Research] astronomers can know that the sun, moon, and stars are embedded in a "firmament," without having to look through a telescope [Gen. 1:6]. ICR ornithologists can know that there are four-legged birds [Lev. 11:20] and feathered bats [Lev. 11:13-19] without having to do any field-work. Without bothering to go to the zoo, ICR mammalogists can know that rabbits chew the cud [Lev. 11:6] and camels lack cloven hooves. [Lev. 11:4] ICR physiologists do not need to do expensive biochemical experiments to elucidate the mechanisms of life, since they already "know" that it is blood or breath [Gen. 9:4],[Gen. 2:7] that makes something alive.
I think this also brings an end to the 'the bible is inerrant' discussions we've been having.
