The wife is listed as a possession, and so are the servants, including the men servants. And you can probably rule out children since they would not be owners of anything like houses or servants or cattle. So the only one's left are the fathers. The thing to remember is that OT Israel was a very patriarchal society. The father was the corporal and spiritual head of his family, and he was to set an example that the rest of his family was to follow. So even if you said that the ten commandments were only written for the fathers, they still would have been passed to the rest of the family because the father was required to teach his family and the family was required to obey. |
