Killing in name of a religion has very little to do with the religion I think, but with the culture those people live in and maybe with how "civilised" that culture is. There are plenty of comparisons between Islamitic countries now and Christian countries several years/decades ago.
In our own culture, new technologies that provide us with more information about the rest of the world and perhaps evolution itself made man more open to other things then their own. I think it made the fanaticism in christianity less.
These developments started here in the western world and are still happening or starting to happen at other places in the world.
It is the fanatics that do the killing, and I think the fanatic is going to fade away or already is fading away. Look at eastern Turkey for example.
Of course you belief that your beliefs are best but a lot of you here seem to forget that that doesn't mean that other beliefs are less.
