Debating Discrimination
Two student groups at Washburn Law School sponsored a controversial debate Wednesday night between two well-known Topekans. Attorney Pedro Irigonegaray and the Reverend Fred Phelps debated in front of at least 400 people at the Washburn Student Union over the issue of whether gays in Topeka need to be protected by law from discrimination.
This issue came to light a little over a year ago when Topeka's City Council decided not to include homosexuals in groups of people protected from discrimination under city ordinance.
Phelps says no one in Topeka has come forward with evidence that they have been discriminated against, so there's no need for such a law. Irigonegaray says in his experience as an attorney, he has seen plenty of hate and bigotry against homosexuals.
Phelps believes the people who have come forward complaining about discrimination against homosexuals are really just attacking him. Phelps and members of his family can frequently be seen protesting homosexual behavior. He says, his protests have nothing to do with gays being able to get jobs, or get into restaurants, etc.
Irigonegaray disagrees, and feels that gays have been discriminated against for years, and we need to have a law that protects them.
Oh, man! That liar!! I distinctly remember hearing about the Phelps family throwing one of their little temper tantrums when a restaurant owner hired a gay person. The Phelps's harassed people at the restaurant so much, the owner finally had to close down.
That lying little weasel!!
